Alright to start it off I'm not getting an MBP until the refresh, but I was just wondering what you guys think.

The set up I have at the moment is a 15 high-end with glossy hi-res and Applecare.

=$2648

The 17 with Applecare

=$2848

Now I don't have a problem carrying more weight or whatever, and I like more screen real estate. Are there any other negatives to having a 17 over a 15?

Also, if I bought a 17, how long would I have to return it and switch for a 15?

You would have 14 days.

The 17" has issues with SATA-III, I believe. http://blog.macsales.com/11895-2011-macbook-pro-sata-problems-resolved Even the update is a hit-and-miss.
