2006 Intel Mac Pro + Windows 8 = no optical audio?

ok so I bought a samsung 2.1 soundbar with subwoofer and connected it to my mac pro through the optical audio output. everything works fine in Lion 10.7.5 but I cant get any sound from Windows 8 via Bootcamp. There are no driver conflicts or missing drivers. I've selected digital audio (S/PDIF) as my playback default device. Is there special drivers I need to install? Is digital audio even possible with windows 8 on an early mac pro?
