2006 Macbook - Streaming video fails when ext. monitor connected

I have a 2006 original Macbook Core Duo that's been treating me fine for years.

However, when I connect an exterior monitor (DVI), Youtube videos cease playing properly (on either of the monitors). They load fine, and the sound plays, but I see nothing but a black square. Once I disconnect the exterior monitor, things go back to normal.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?
