Hello everyone:

First post on here - I have a Mac Pro (intel tower) from 2006 which I use Windows 7 with exclusively.
I had Macs in the house when I decided to put 7 on the pro so didn't see the need to dual boot etc.

I was going to bootcamp it but had issues with getting that to work so out of frustration about two years ago when I finally got the thing running I installed Windows 7 natively and it worked.

I am a PC user first and foremost.

I have a Mac repair to do which requires me to use OS X. I assume running Windows like this has altered something in the Mac firmware or Bios and it isn't as simple as removing the HD that has windows on it putting a blank in and installing OS X from DVD or USB?

Can someone please confirm or deny before I spend hours getting annoyed?

Thanks

Graham

It should be possible to install OS X onto a blank hard disk put into your computer, provided you can get hold of an install disc for suitable version of OS X.

A 2006 MacPro will most likely be a 1,1 model. If so, Apple's support for the model ended some time ago: the most recent version of OS X that will install on the computer is OS X 10.7.5 ("Lion") (likewise the most recent version of Windows that will install is apparently Windows 7).

If you try and install a more recent version of macOS / OS X it will fail.

Hi:

Thanks for the reply. The issue I have is in limited tests that I have done i.e. pulling all HDs out of the Pro Mac and switching the machine on result in it acting like a PC in as much as you get a black screen akin to DOS (but not obviously) saying no boot device found, as opposed to the Apple exclamation mark.

Thus, I feel I have in someway edited the fimware or something so that holding down left shift etc doesn;t go into Apple's boot menu at all.

Thanks
