2007 15" MBP Ripply LCD Backlight?

My girlfriend's laptop seems to have a bit of a screen problem. She says that after a restart it will go away usually, but it may appear randomly at any time right after startup, or after using it for an hour. To me, it looks like the backlight seems to be going bad in sections. This would require an entire LCD replacement, correct?

Thoughts? Common problem? What else could it be?

I figured the inverter and all the backlight stuff was integrated into the panel. So, most likely the problem doesn't lie in the hinge ribbon cable or anything like that.
