has anybody ever completed a CPU upgrade with a view to changing a 32bit windows installation to 64bit. I have a penryn t9500 cpu ready. I have 2007 imac"24" with 1tb ssd running El Capitan. When I installed the 32bit windows, my information was that 64bit windows could not be run without a CPU upgrade, I have had the imac apart in the past so the work does not bother me but inadequate knowledge does. I am not a mac expert so all the help I can get will be well appreciated. M

The standard T7700 (2.4 GHz) supports 64 bit, so you should be able to install 64 bit OS without CPU upgrade. Which Windows version do you want to install?

I am currently using win 7 professional which I intend to continue using regardless of the many spurious reasons why I should move on. I must confess I never understood why there should be a problem running a 64bit OS on a 64 bit machine apart maybe for lack of drivers. The cpu upgrade should make it possible to upgrade the OS beyond El Capitan even though El Capitan is a perfectly good OS. The biggest problem is the deliberate lack of backward comparability of some newer software. That is especially true of Mac software. I really like my old Mac and I will keep it running as long as possible. and to hell with marketing executives efforts make perfectly good machines unusable and force people to buy newer machines. However I digress , Sorry. Though my computer usage predates Gates & Jobs when no hdds or the mouse and GUI, I still struggled for several days to get windows installed on this m/c The now famous "SELECT" drive and frozen mouse syndrome did not help. But should explain why I am seeking any advice I can get Thanks for your response and info request M
