After waiting for the new mac pros I'm now faced with a tough decision. Should I get the new one, would want dual quad core with discount it would cost me just over $3,000 or should I get the old 2.8 quad core which would only cost me $1800 for the base model. Right now I'm thinking the old one, I do video editing and this would be my first mac pro, any advice is welcome. I'd like to know the disadvantages to getting the older one.

Get the old, play around with how it fits your needs, and then decide if you want to upgrade parts of it or if you want to sell it and move to new.

Get the old one. Can't beat that price. Also, this is the first generation of Mac Pro's based on the Nehalem architecture. There's bound to be a few bugs or oversights in it.

I don't mean to be rude, but if you don't know why you need the new one vs. the old one, chances are you aren't doing the kind of stuff that an iMac can't do. An iMac will do video editing MORE than fine.

Nope, it won't

Thanks though

$1800 is such a sweet deal....I bet you could get away with it.

$1800 for the Dual-Xeon 8-Core MacPro?!?!?!?!

I would buy in a heart beat. You can upgrade that machine up to 32GB RAM, faster hard drives, and by summer even chuck in the 4870 video card.

If I could find one for that price (new - closeout), I would be all over it in a second.

Has anyone seen any of the 2008 Mac Pros selling at EOL pricing yet?

Just single 2.8 quad core, I'd already have it if it was dual :D

With a second look it was the 2.8 dual quad core, pretty sure I'm gonna pick this one up, still going to wait for some test between the two.
