Hi and merry Christmas to you!

I think today mz iMac died. Booting the Mac (doesn't matter whether I boot Mac OS 10.6, Windows or the install DVD) I would get a "blank screen" coloured differently each time (I've gotten blue, dark blue, brown, black, grey, pink so far) after a certain amount of time, ranging from several seconds after loading the OS to several minutes. Seemingly at random.

Sadly I can't post the logs. Trying to look at (or copy) logs causes the Mac to crash almost instantly. What I've gathered so far is that the NVidia (8800GS) adapter seems to be the cause of the problem.
Backtrace within the logs tells me that some nv50hal thingy caused a hiccup in kernel_task or something like that (not a pro in deciphering panic logs I'm afraid :( ), which seems to stem from a defective graphics adapter.

Now, I do sort of know where the problem is, but the question that bugs me is... Can they just exchange the graphics adapter or would they need to replace the whole logic board? As a general guideline, how much would the replacement cost me? Would it be "better" to just buy a new iMac?

Thanks in advance...
