I have an Early 2008 iMac 24" Aluminium here that has a fresh Mac OS X 10.6.8 and Boot Camp Assistant Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 installations. The reason for this computers continued existence is for using XP for legacy programs - so that's my main priority.

I am wondering if I can however update Mac OS X to a later version (I believe up to 10.11 El Capitan is compatible) without upsetting the Boot Camp Assistant WinXP installation?

And if so, how please?
While Software Update still works to download and install the latest 10.6 updates, the App Store does not (error message: "Cannot Connect to the App Store") and therefore later OS X cannot be downloaded.
I've tried a bootable USB El Capitan installed and CD/DVD disc El Capitan installer but it wouldn't run them in 10.6 to upgrade from those.
The El Capitan dmg file downloaded from Apple is too large to transfer over on a FAT32 USB drive.
Do I need to do an intermediary step like installing 10.7, .8, .9 or .10 first?

Thanks.
