G'day,

My father's 2008 20" iMac has had one of its backlights fail (I am guessing). The bottom half of the screen fades darker.

I have no doubt it is not worth repairing... but he's wanting an idea of how much it would cost to repair.

Can someone chuck a figure at me?

As it's no longer supported by Apple - would professional repair even be possible? (Cos I'm not doing it!)

Thanks

cosmic

The cost would equal to the price of an old 2008 iMac on sales where you can reach, plus shipping.
It's easy as that.
Why? Because repairing the LCD LED will takes at least half a day, providing that you have acquired all necessary tools and parts. How much do the professionals in your neighborhood charge for a half-day fix?
The replacable LED strips cost only 15$ + shipping. The biggest cost will be labour, as usual.

It's not worth repairing unless you can get the job done for next-to-nothing.
Tell him that.

If you look for something newer (but still used), try to get "newer than" 2015.
A 2017 version iMac would be a good choice.
Or a 2018 Mini (Apple refurbished if you can get it).
