I've just got myself a second hand imac 2008 model. Within 30 minutes of it being on I've noticed the the top left hand corner at the back gets very hot
I bet the internals have dust in the vents since it was second hand. If you feel like it connact a computer repair guy (that does Macs) and also install a SSD or replace or add and SSD to make a DIY Fusion Drive.
That is completely normal for those iMacs. They have a very well designed cooling system where the body acts and a large passive heatsink. Thus causing it to be very warm. Because of this, their fans rarely spin faster than their minimum speed.
