I have 2 2008 laptops, one MBP 15" 8gb/320gb HHD and the other Unibody MP 13" 4gb/1TB HHD. Both the laptops function sufficiently for me and my wife but they get really hot near the fan area when running certain programs like iPhoto or Parallels. I have checked with the 'Fan Control' app and both seem to have the fans fully functional.

I'm thinking of upgrading to SSD and was wondering if this will solve some of the heat problems. Other than the heat problem there has not been a reason to upgrade our laptops. The biggest deterrent for us has been the limited size of the SSD in the new laptops. We have all our family photos in iPhoto (about 250gb) and the new SSDs are not that big enough or allow us to upgrade.

Thanks.

It is unlikely that a SSD will lower the amount of heat in that area. That heat is caused by the CPU/GPU and there isn't anything you can do to reduce it other that not use your machine.
