Hi,
I'm looking at getting a used 2009 MacBook and know that there is a known issue with the palm rest cracking as well as some spider cracks in the plastic around the hinges.

That said is it possible to replace this myself or is it something only an Apple Store can do? And if only Apple can do it - do they still do it, being that the computer is 5 years old?

An Apple Store will still likely replace a 2009 topcase for free, but not 2008 or older. Get it to one soon as support for them will be dropping soon. You can replace it yourself. A new one costs $50-$90.
