2009 Macbook Pro wake on bluetooth problems

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with a 1TB Seagate Hybrid drive & 8 GB of RAM that has a cracked but working screen. I usually use closed with an external monitor and Apple wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. Usually it works great, but occasionally, maybe once per week, it completely looses communication with the bluetooth keyboard and mouse and won't wake up from them. Once it does wake up, I will sometimes have to re-pair the keyboard to get it to work.
Any ideas on how to solve this issue?
