2010 ATV & parental Control?

Ok may be a stupid question but here it goes. I have about a gig of movies and TV shows ripped to a drive connected to my Mac Mini. I am considering buying an Apple TV for my kid’s room. I have read there are parental controls for iTunes. Will it work on a shared drive? I don’t want the Kid watching (The Hangover or Step Brothers) just to mention a few inappropriate rips. Would I be better served with Plex than iTunes? I don’t even know how I would test it before purchasing the ATV.
