Hello,
I have a 2010 macbook pro running el Capitan. For about a year now I have been experiencing the "black screen" crash. The computer will be running fine and then suddenly restart for no reason. The restart screen has the small gray text in a few languages saying to hit any key to continue blah blah blah. Now it will not start up at all! It has power and when it begins to come on, a bunch of "code" covers the screen and then it shuts down. The code makes no sense and is too long to add to this forum. Can anyone please help???
Thanks

Yes. It is a 2010 15" MacBook pro. I did did research and I think it's some kind of "Panic" code or error. It goes so fast I can tell. I may need a new logic board. I am researching that too. Everything on my laptop is in VERY GOOD condition even though it is so old. If I can figure this out, I'll just keep it.

A failed capacitor sounds like a hardware issue. Is this something a can replace? Would it require soldering? If it can't be fixed, can I dump the HD on an external HD (usb external HD)?

Yes, the capacitor can be replaced. Once this is done, the GPU kernel panics will stop. I had the same problem with a 15" 2010 and had a local repair shop replace it. It's been fine for years.

Yes, the internal HD is a standard 2.5" SATA drive. It can be placed into a USB case and used as a regular external drive.
