I was wondering whether I should get the baseline macbook pro 2010 13" or baseline macbook air 2011 11".I will mostly be using my laptop for schoolwork and surfing the internet.Do you think the speed in the macbook air is enough to compensate for it's lack of screen size and memory?

Either one can easily handle the tasks you describe. It's up to you to decide your preference on screen size or other factors.

I will also be doing some light gaming. But nothing too taxing like max payne.I just want to know if the speed difference when launching apps and browsing the internet on the macbook air is significant enough to be worth trading off the extra screen real-estate on the macbook pro?

The Flash memory in the MBA will make booting up and launching apps significantly faster than the HDD in the MBP. Only you can decide if that speed is worth giving up the larger screen. Of course you can always upgrade the MBP to a SSD at any time.
