Running Mavericks, 2010 Macbook 2.4 ghz 4 GB RAM.

Every time I open my laptop back up, the screen is locked. There's no spinning beach ball or sign of an error; they keyboard and mousepad just are unresponsive. If I press the power button, the shut down options will pop up on my screen, so I don't think the computer itself is freezing. To fix the problem, I've been having to hard reset every time I want to use the computer. It's also locked up a few times while using it, so I'm not sure if it's even a problem purely with closing the laptop.

Update: screen now locks when the display sleeps, and not just when I close the computer. I've turned all my energy saving preferences off to avoid it locking during use, but that's not really a sustainable fix.
