2010 MBP 13" video lag: tweak help?

i have a 2010 mbp 13" with 8GB ram and 2.66GHz C2D processor. I typically run the laptop with a 24" LED monitor (non-TB) and find that video lags sometimes when I have the video screen expanded to max.

anyone have any recommendations to tweak and get the video to play smoothly?
