Probably a very simple question, but if I were to buy an 8Gb RAM upgrade kit for my Mid 2010 MBP, I assume the RAM that's inside it is compatible with the first generation unibody MBP that was released in Oct 2008?

no

if i remember correctly, that mbp used ddr2 and the current mbp uses ddr3

Everymac.com says they both take "1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM" so yes, that'd be fine. I'd suggest double checking the exact models at everymac as there are a few different possible 2008 MBPs.

Edit: Oct 2008 MBP is fine, the early 2008 MBP is not...
