hi, i have this 2010 white macbook that i've had for quite a while. recently when i've tried to use it, i turn it on and the power light will light up, it makes a single short/medium beep through the pc speaker and then instantly shuts off. i've tried different ram sticks and combinations of ram, so that's not it. does anyone know what the issue might be?

Assuming you did all of the other usual steps (resetting SMC and NVRAM/PRAM) the symptoms you've described also suggest to me a possible problem with your topcase -- I'm thinking it could be a shorted power button, or even a wonky connection between the motherboard and the keyboard ribbon cable. Does your MagSafe light give off any odd behaviour? (i.e. no light, showing green, then orange).

hi, the magsafe charger just shows green as it normally would.
i think the motherboard might be dead, that's the only thing i can think of.

You may check this:
- defective harddrive-cable: try to boot the harddrive through external usb-case
- defective hard drive: try to boot the MB a) by OSX-install-DVD b) by an alternative external OSX-system (USB or FW with another compatible Mac in TDM)

hi, we're not talking about booting the OS here, the system won't even post. no chime, just that beep code from the PC speaker.

Well, then maybe RAM (you've already checked that ...), RAM-socket(s)/logic-board, i/o-board, cables ... good luck!

If you’re comfortable working inside the machine, there’s a few things I’d check.

1. As @rampancy mentioned, check the keyboard cable. A poorly seated cable there can cause no end of headaches.

2. Disconnect literally everything from the logic board besides the power and fan, then use the short pads to power it on. I would even remove the RAM. See what it does! If it seems to stay on, reconnect the display and try again. Slowly reassemble, trying one component at a time until it starts to fail again.
