2011 Early MacBook Pro start up issues

Hello,
I have an 2011 Early MacBook Pro. When I would turn on my computer my screen would flash with black and grey diagonal lines before it's gets to the login screen. When I had the MacBook Pro connected to an external monitor and turned it on none of these problems occurred. Is there something wrong with my video card? How should I go about this since I do not have Apple Care? Thanks!
