I have a mid 2011 27" iMac, with a 256GB SSD and a failing 2TB HDD.
It started misbehaving yesterday, videos would pause for several seconds/minutes during playback, it beach-balled while browsing finder and a number of apps reported errors writing data, all of which occurred while reading or writing to the HDD. To top it all there are multiple occurrences of "kernel: disk1s3: I/O error" in the system log. The disk is still functioning, but it is clearly not happy (file copy operations fail more often then not), so it's new HDD time.
I'm aware of the hard drive temperature issue so I've ordered the OWC "In-line Thermal Sensor for Apple iMac 2011", I just need to decide what drive to replace it with.
On the basis that I don't want to have to open the iMac again I'll probably stick a 4TB drive in (I'm not aware of issues with the 2011 iMacs and 4TB drives). What's the general consensus with using WD Red drives in an iMac. I appreciate they're designed for use with a NAS, but there are lots of positive reports of people using them in desktops, but as always there are other opinions, with some suggestions the drives' error correcting can cause issues when used for non-NAS devices.
