2011 iMac, Ethernet gone.

Everything was fine last night. shut down the computer (not something I normally do, but was in windows and about to go to bed).
Wake up this morning, launch OSX and my internet does not work. System Preferences said it was unplugged. After trying different cables, ports on router, etc. I restarted in windows to see if it worked fine. Windows 7 has no issues and ethernet works perfectly fine there.

Back in OSX I tried removing the ethernet interface from network preferences, but now it is not there to add again. In system information under ethernet it says there are no ethernet cards available.

Any thoughts or a solution to this?

What do you mean? I have tried removing the 'ethernet' option from the network preferences inside of system preferences.. But now there is no way to add it back.

I even tried copying the ionetworkingfamily.kext from my other 2011 imac.. still nothing.
Also tried resetting Pram. nothing.
Also tried installing the 10.7.2 combo update (over the already installed 10.7.2)... Still nothing.


Don't think it is a hardware issue as it is working fine in windows right now.

the perference cache that's inside library/caches

trash com.apple.preferencepanes.cache

and start the sys pref panel again

Is the port available to add now though?
You press the + and choose from the drop down menu.
Reboot and give it the ol' PRAM zap.
Hold cmmd-opt-p-r for 3 boot chimes and release.
Try again.

Nope it wasn't there, thats what I meant by no way to add it back. I already tried resetting PRAM.. will try again though.

Ok resetting the PRAM let me add the ethernet device again and it is visible in system information as well..

BUT, the original problem still exists. It says 'Cable unplugged' and still no connection.

This is driving me insane.
I restarted back into windows (since that is the only place where ethernet works) and now back in OSX.
The system preferences still show ethernet, but the System information says there is no ethernet card again. Also in system preferences there is no mac address!

No, had no reason to think it is hardware since it works in a different operating system.. Wil try now though.

Ok, ran AHT.. It said no hardware faults. under the hardware profile tab it showed the correct mac address for ethernet.

So I restarted...... and now every thing works?!
