Hi Guys.

I have a 2011 27" iMac which i prefer to use on Ethernet.

about 2-3 weeks ago i noticed my Ethernet would stop working and appear in the network settings as "Ethernet cable not plugged in" even though the cable is plugged in.

If i restart my mac it seems to work fine for a few hours then tell me the cable is disconnected again.

Ive tried a different cable and still no luck.

Please tell me its software related.

This can also be caused by a problem with whatever your Ethernet cable is plugged in to, such as a router, switch or modem. Can you use WiFi, and if you can does everything work OK?

You can also try Apple Hardware Test with instructions on how, here. This might show if your iMac has a hardware problem.

If you're using OS 10.7 or 10.8 hold down the D key at startup. Some people have suggested that if this procedure doesn't invoke the AHT, then try command D or option D at startup.
