I have 2011 iMac and have noticed that it takes forever to open iPhoto and even longer when trying to read iPhone and upload pictures. I also notice slow process when switching users or restarting iMac.

It is running OS X 10.9 3.2 i3 and 4 GB Ram

We dont do anything crazy on it, mostly surf the net, email and my wife uses it for work which she using some windows software to mirror her office desktop I think.

I want to try and speed it up if possible but have no idea where to start or what to do.

Not sure if I need more Ram.

I was thinking about taking it into an Apple Store.

Thoughts?

Memory. If you have 4GB of RAM, you could add a 8GB kit to the empty slots bringing you to 12GB of ram.

Are you sure it's 3.2GHz and 2011? The only 3.2GHz i3 iMac I can find is from 2010.

Is 16 GB of Ram over doing it?

This is probably because of your hard drive. If you're using a normal HDD (5400 or 7200rpm), it's normal.

If you want iPhoto to open up in around 1-2 bounces in the Dock, get an SSD.

Upgrade your RAM also. 4GB is insufficient. 8GB is okay but you'll run out of it pretty quickly if you run VMs.
