just wondering whether i should get it with the apple ssd installed, or put in an owc mercury extreme myself.

what's the performance difference?

The performance difference between HDD and SSD is noticeable, the difference between SSDs... not so much.

A better question for you is, "which is more reliable?", esp for the not so user accessible iMac.

In an iMac, I'd ALWAYS go Apple SSD, (all other models, sure try a 3rd party).

Do you really want to be lifting out that screen again should the SSD be a bit dodge?

I went Apple SSD. That said, I went Apple SSD in my MBP too... ;)

If the extra cost really bothers you then you don't have much choice but to do it yourself. If you can afford it, and you're willing to pay, just get the Apple one BTO.
