With the iPod touch 4g/5g slated to be on sale on 10/12, I have a few questions(Black model)

For the 8GB model, will there be a new shipment of 199$ iPod touches OR will it just be the old 4G models that once cost 229 but changed to $199?

It seems that if the old 4G models are lowered in price and then sold, it would run iOS 4.3.5? I doubt Apple employees are allowed to open the package, update and then seal off the package to be sold??

Or would it be likely that during the first week, some iPods will be sold running iOS 4.3.5 and after the old stock is sold out, iPod touches that are then sold will be running iOS5.0 and beyond.

Would it be advised to wait a couple of days/weeks to read the reviews and problems before making a purchase

or

Should I just get one as soon as its released since exchanges can be done if there are light leaks, etc.

Thanks in advance for people who can help me out!

Theres no difference in the iPod touch bought today vs 10/12 except for the price and iOS5. All their doing on 10/12 is shipping with iOS5 and lowering the price. I guess it depends on 3rd party retailers wether they want to drop the price or not, but I'm sure they will.

The 2011 iPod Touch is just the 4G, but white and a lower price point.

What will happen to the old iPod touches(real 4G ones).

I'm sure there is still a very limited stock of real 4G ones so isn't there a chance that ipods on Oct 12 will run 4.3.5.

Unless Apple is allowed open boxes and update firmwares? Does this happen?

No, they will just drop the price.

They are all "real 4G" iPods. They'll be updated to iOS 5 and run as normal. If you buy a 2011 iPod that has iOS 4.3.5, just update it to iOS 5. Nothing new.

Well the White iPod touches are new so I'm assuming that there has to be production of "new" 4G devices(black and white)

If it is really the old ones, then that would be good. It should be free of all problems?Unlike last year when there was light leaks, overheating, etc

No new iPods at all this year.

Shuffle: same, lower price in Australia.
Nano: same, lower price in Australia.
Classic: same, lower price in Australia.
Touch: same, lower price in Australia, white colour added.

First year we've not had a single hardware upgrade. Good for me, I won't have to buy one!

The white ones are not new. Its just a new faceplate. Just like the white iPhone wasn't "new". It was just a different colour.

Nope, the black ones are the same, same product number and everything. Apple have continued to ship these products.

The white ones will ship with iOS 5 with iOS 5 pre-installed black units gradually leaking into the supply channel.

They don't need to change production, just upload a different OS at the end.

Good, I probably won't wait then, if all hardware is the same problems should be very rare, only problem is that if it runs 4.3.5 and of course I want to run 5.0 , updating might take some time with a slow wifi connection.

Yet Apple calls it an update.....

Actually, I think you're disappointing yourself through misinterpreting what Apple said. At the keynote they mentioned three things: a lower price point, iOS 5 compatible, and the addition of a new colour. They never said there was ANY other changes aside from those. You're the one assuming they added in newer features (ala the iPhone 4S), when they never said that themselves.

Macrumors from weeks back do suggest an oleophobic screen and a better ambient light sensor...

And it would make sense for Apple to eliminate 256MB RAM chips and stick 512 MB RAM as iPhone4 is still under production and uses 512 MB RAM. It would be a good idea to unify production material to reduce overall costs.

I will probably wait a few days to see what ifixit finds in the ipod touch before proceeding to buy it later on.

*Apple never reveals all changes, back in 2010, people thought that the camera could only record video but it turned out it could take stills. Apple surely didn't want to boast a 0.7MP camera or in that sense an oleophobic display ,etc.

Just realized that you are the OP of the sticky thread on ipod touch features.

It hasn't been updated since 2009 though?

Not entirely sure what you're implying with this, but I haven't updated it because the majority of people go into the iPhone/iPad forums, which already contain many topics relating to the features of specific iPhone OS/iOS versions.

Just thought it could be updated to reflect on 3G and 4G models since they were missing when I first read it.

iPod touch users got screwed over big time this year.

all they get is just a color.

Yep, although I'm going to purchase my first one so I didn't get screwed as much as the people who were looking to upgrade from other generations.
