I have a 2011 MBP that has some WiFi trouble I'm hoping I can get some help with. Let me elaborate on what the problem is, how I got here, and then hopefully someone can help me.

The problem I have is that my MBP often doesn't recognize WiFi at all. One of two situations happen: I get an error no WiFi hardware is installed, or my WiFi is off and I can't enable it. The computer can boot up in either scenario and I simply never get to use WiFi, or the computer boots normally and after some amount of time (sometimes half an hour, sometimes a few hours) the WiFi just completely stops working and it will show it's searching but never finds anything.

For some reason, the hardware seems more likely to work when I don't use the laptop for a while. After I get a working session, for whatever time it works for, the next few days are unlikely to have moments where the WiFi works. If I wait a week or a month, I often get it to work without too much trouble. I can't begin to explain why, maybe the NIC overheats or something.

My MBP was on OS X Lion for the longest time, I never bothered to update the OS. I first noticed this problem not long after I updated to Yosemite, and it has occurred after I updated to El Capitan as well.

I've tried various fixes for it, such as generating new WiFi settings, and I even formatted it. I've tried resetting the SMC, but that didn't work either.

I'm very much so at a loss as to why this happens and what to do. If someone has suggestions on what I can try, I'd very much appreciate it.
