So,

Just did the latest software update (10.7.4)... Had all applications closed, and when I went to press 'restart' on the software update window (after it had downloaded), it just changed to a grey screen.... It's been like that now for 40 minutes.

Should I hold down the power button and try turn it on again? Or are there better methods?

Thanks.

Don't worry. There is no way the update actually bricked your computer.

I understand you frustration... frankly i've found allot of OS X updates to be like running a gauntlet. Seems like they are getting influenced by Microsnot.

Yes you should restart, and you should probably get ready to reinstall your system. Hopefully u backed up. Been there myself... happens all to often...

No worries guys...

After about an hour it just suddenly rebooted and installed properly... The first start-up was very slow after that... did another software update, and downloaded the Safari one.... Reboot and now it's working fine.

False alarm guys! :)
