On my third attempt for installing Windows 7. First time it hung in the installer on "Expanding Files (0%)". Second time it hung asking me to hit any key to boot from DVD, and this time it's hung on the "Starting Windows" screen.

What gives?

Dirty/scratched DVD? Have you tried cleaning/buffing it? I had no problems installing Win7 (except I had to do it twice because I had the wrong disk the first time and put 32 bit on by mistake)

Brand new DVD, only used once before (edit), no scratches. Rebooted and it hung asking me to hit any key to boot from DVD again. Rebooted again and it appears to be getting further this time.

Spoke too soon. Hung installing Windows at 0% "Expanding Windows files". Trying another DVD.

After 15 or so minutes with the second DVD, hanging at the 'Expanding Windows Files (0%)" step, it appears to be moving along. Odd.

Thats normal, I recall on 64-bit, it used to hang at 7 or 14 percent for a long time before progressing. If there is an actual problem, it will error out.
