2011 MBP Media buttons

Is there any way to change the functions of the media buttons? I want to use the rewind and forward buttons to skip forward in small increments when using VLC or iTunes (i.e. 10 seconds). At the moment those buttons just jump to the next file which is not what I need. I know I can change other buttons on my keyboard to do this but I want to change the function of those buttons specifically. If anyone knows how to do this it would be greatly appreciated.
