I've got a late 2011 MBP and bought a 2TB Seagate USB 3.0 external drive a few months ago.

I use it for Time Machine backups, however its hit and miss each time I plug it in as to whether the Mac will detect it.

Sometimes it's fine and connects first go, other times it takes three restarts for it to be picked up, often it has to be unplugged and reconnected ten times before its picked up.

I've tried some other USB 3.0 drives and these also have problems being picked up.

I have a USB 2.0 250gb external drive and this (along with other USB external storage devices gets picked up fine every time.

It must be a USB 3.0 compatibility issue but as I understand it USB 3.0 is backwards compatible.

Problem is I do need a drive with at least 1TB capacity but these seem hard to come by (in the UK anyway).

I don't see why it would get picked up sometimes but not others.

Any ideas?
