I was editing on a trial version of FCPX, when my Macbook screen went black. I was able to see the curser and i could get the force quit screen to come up. On the bottom of the screen there was what looked like calibration numbers (-25 0 25 60 75) but everything else was black. After about 4 minutes the screen reappeared. Does this sound like a software or hardware issue? Should I get a replacement?

Run the Apple Hardware Test.

The Apple Hardware Test (AHT) contains a suite of diagnostics that will test the hardware of your computer. It's a great way to rule out a hardware issue when troubleshooting your computer. If that doesn't reveal anything you're still under warranty and can take it to the Apple store.
