Let me be clear, the backlit keyboard does turn on when I manually turn it on. However, it doesn't automatically turn on when I'm typing in low-light or no-light conditions. I have the option checked in system preferences, and it still doesn't automatically turn on. Any body have a quick fix?

I held a flashlight up to the ambient light sensor and both the screen and the keyboard adjusted accordingly. The keyboard even turned itself on, so it does work; just poorly.

Yeah, it's a little (or maybe a lot) less sensitive than the MBR of the past. I don't know about the regular MBR 2012, but definitely noticed that even with the lights on in my room, the backlight doesn't turn off. Maybe this is what they wanted? I know that using the laptop on a bright day outside, the backlight immediately turns off.

My first rMBP was the same way, so it's not a defect.
