2012 iMac's NAND SSD used for Fusion Drive

Did the teardown of the 2012 iMac by Japanese site Kodawarisan take note of the brand, model and make of the 128GB NAND SSD?

With Apple asking $250 for a 128GB NAND SSD I am thinking a DIY job may be a better solution?








I know this will exceed $250 but a 4TB WD Black + 240GB Intel 330 would be wow!

Also buying cheap a couple of G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-1600C10D-16GSQ that works with 2012 MBPs so I can up the RAM to 32GB!

There wasn't an SSD in there I don't think. And there was only space for a 2.5" spinning drive.

No, the SSD part of the fusion drive goes near the USB ports. The connector is the silvery looking thing. Looks like the same connector as in MBPr and MBA 2012.

It's been stated on several websites (Anandtech and Ars Technica come to mind) that the SSD part of the Fusion drive is the same SSD stick found in the Retina MacBook Pro's. OWC does offer those but only 480GB ones. I'm hoping they are compatible!

Why do you need e exact same drive? Go to the mini forum and people have been dyi'ing fusion drives using all different sized Samsung, Crucial, etc SSDs. It makes no difference.

You misunderstood. I was wondering if the SSD sticks are the same what is being used with the 2012 MBA. It is for clarification as I am generally accustomed to 2.5" SSDs.

My assumption is the iMac uses a 2.5" SSD not a SSD stick.

Correct, but it is to early to tell. I heard it is retina MacBook Pro styled and not MacBook Air like.

Update: Macsales tore the 21.5" down and found the SSD stick to be retina MacBook Pro styled but they only included the connector on the higher end 21.5" model.
