2012 i5 1.8 with 256ssd, the top part of the keyboard is getting really hot during normal usage. anyone else have issues with this or heard of anything like it?

This is normal during heavy CPU usage. Also ensure you do not use your Mac on a bed, couch, blanket or other place where it will essentially insulate the bottom. Try to use it on a hard surface if possible.
 
I don't know if this is the case with current i5 and i7 macs, but Adobe Flash used to be a resource hog and it'd cause my laptop to heat up pretty quickly. I installed ClickToFlash and it helped a lot.
