2012 MacBook dim screen w/external monitor gray

I have at the start up gong for my 2012 13-inch MacBook Air but all I can on its screen is a white box that is centered. It's dim enough that I can't read it. When I hook up an external monitor the connection is recoginized but the screen is grayed out. I can see the cursor on the external monitor.

What might be wrong with the laptop? Is the screen bad or might the video card be bad?
