I recently had a no boot/error message on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro that I tracked down to a bad SATA cable. I temporarily pulled the SSD and booted it thru a USB port to get it to boot until I was able to install a new cable. However in doing so, or maybe in replacing the cable I must have damaged some hardware component, maybe thru a power surge or static charge, as I lost all sound. My preferences settings now show digital sound out but no external speakers. In addition, my headphone jack no longer works. I have tried virtually every software remedy I could find including installing Mojave, without success, and have to believe it is hardware related.
I am thinking about taking this to the Genius bar but given the age of the laptop I am reluctant to sink too much money into a repair. In addition, my nearest Apple store is about an hour's drive away. So, can anyone help me with some hardware questions?
Is there a separate sound board or is it part of the Apple logic board? Is this something that most Genius bars stock and does anyone know the approximate time and cost to repair? Can I assume this is something most Genius bars typically repair/replace? Thank you in advance for any suggestions and help.
