2012 MacBook Pro with external screen, random black outs

Well as title really.
My macbook pro external AND internal screen (internal less so) sometimes goes black for 2-5 seconds.

Anything on screen likes videos etc still play and audio is not affected.

It is very annoying.

my 24" screen is not too big for the macbook to handle, I dont think.

Well swapped out the 24" screen with my old 20" cinema screen, has a tear in the polarising film but works and is usable mostly. Bough and OFFICIAL new apple DVI adaptor as well.

Been using all evening and not a single black out on the external screen. so the screen or 3rd party cable must be at fault.
