Hi this is a macbook 2012 (non retina model). Wondering if ANYone can shed some light on why it sporadically goes to sleep without warning? I've tried resetting the nvram and the other things you can do with the bootkeys. I've recently replaced the battery so I know that's not the issue. The battery meter is accurate.

Basically every now and then it goes to sleep without warning - just straight to black screen. It only takes a second to wake it back up again, but it's really annoying. It mostly seems to do this when it's running off the battery, but I think it might even happen when it's plugged to mains power. It probably only happens every once in several hours of runtime. But it's super annoying.

Any clues?

Have you tried adjusting both the Battery and Power Adaptor settings in the Energy Saver preferences? Perhaps resetting them might help?

What OS are you running? Mojave?

Do you have “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” checked on Battery and/or Power Adapter tabs?

That setting could cause it. There is another hidden setting that might cause it too. It is currently hiding from me and I will post it here once I find it.

P.S., I assume you are Catalina since mid-2012 MBP and older are not Mojave eligible. Correct me if otherwise.

FWIW - My mid 2012 MBP non-retina is running Mojave 10.14.6 - Catalina is the next OS after Mojave

Mojave is also the last OS for 32 software - Catalina and later are 64 bit

Ah, thanks. So much for my memory.

Thanks for the responses! I will check (and undo if applicable) the "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" option. I'm at work now on a different computer. The machine is running Catalina, I'm pretty sure it's the last possible OS it can run.
