2012 MPB won't connect to display

My MBP will not connect to my external display. Connect to an HP 2009m via minidvi to VGA.

Connector cable worked fine with my macbook air, but now that I have this MBP it won't work.

When I plug the cable in to my computer, the computer screen refreshes as if it works, but it does't register to the monitor.


Any ideas?

Just downloaded updates and now my computer won't turn on. Light in the bottom right corner flashes then makes a clicking sound.
