I ordered a refurbished model last night and was wondering how much better or worse your Macbook has gotten. Increased battery life? Decrease? Preformance wise? etc. etc.

I ordered the 13" base model from last year.

I have an late-2012 15" rMBP, and Mavericks runs fine, a little buggy, but overall better than ML imo.

My battery life is much better, getting about another 1.5 hours of life, but some parts of the ui are very stuttery. fresh install.

Cool, so approximately how many actual-use hours total now? ~7?

Get your 2012 rMBP yet? Or delivering tomorrow? Very curious regarding the battery life on Mavericks.

I'm actually picking it up at an Apple store on Friday when it arrives. It's unfortunate that we haven't seen any sort of battery tests on last year's model. :(

I'll be sure to let you know how long it lasts me. :)

Cool, we'll compare notes. I actually ordered the refurb MD212LL/A today to compare to the base 2013 I have. I hope to have mine delivered thur or fri.

How is the battery on the 2013 base model? And performance? I was thinking and grabbing the base model, but it only had 4GB of ram. :(

I'm updating the battery in my other thread with a poll comparing these models.

I'm testing out the HiDPI 1440x900 at the moment. For all tests, here's my settings:

  • Battery Health App for tracking %
  • Chrome, Mail, iMessage, Dropbox always running
  • Chrome: AdBlock, FlashBlock, Lastpass enabled
  • 12 dots brightness/2 dots keyboard, BT off
  • Before Cycle 2, I drained to about 2-5% remaining and then fully charged to 100% as reported by the Battery Health app.

Results so far with the 2013 base 13" rMBP:
Cycle 2
10/26-10/27 2013
1680x1050 retina resolution
322min/82.7% used 6:29 pace

Cycle 3
10/27-10/28 2013
1920x1200 non-retina resolution (using QuickRes)
237min/45.6% used 8:39 pace

Cycle 4
10/28-10/29 2013
1440x900 retina resolution
228min/55.3% used 6:52 pace

I'd put back ML on my gen. 1 if I could. The UI lag in Mavericks is almost unbearable and the battery life has been reduced by 40%. I haven't gotten more than 3 hours and 15 minutes of battery life since upgrading. Before I'd easily get 5 and I haven't changed anything (edit: both values using HD4000).

In my case my early 2013 15" rMBP with Mavericks feels incredibly smoother even on the HD4000.

I'm rocking with a 2012 rMBP and Mavericks :) No complaints, no issues, its been a great upgrade.

I just got the late 2012 13" base rMBP delivered today. Transferred over the Mavericks software and my settings via TimeMachine and will start to put it through the paces tonight.

Your installation must be botched somehow. I have been using Mavericks since DP1 - battery life improvement and much smoother overall experience than ML. Maybe try reinstalling?

did you install over a old install ? if so do a fresh install , i had the same issue and that brought my battery to 8hr or so, more than rated.

its made my refurb 2.5 '12 rmbp a even better machine, so glad i got it.

Really? UI lag is nearly non-existent for me and the battery life has been so much better now. I can easily reach 9-10 hours with writing reports, coding, reading pdf documents and listening to music on iTunes. Truth be told I have turned the brightness down to halfway and the wi-fi off as well. :p

I wasn't notified when you posted this reply. I didn't see, so I apologize.:(
I will post a more detailed post later this week (lots of school and work). But I've been getting about 6:30 from my 2012 rMBP. I will post the details as soon as I can! :)

I only have 6 cycles on it. Going to try and get it to 14 cycles. Will it make any difference?

No prob. cycle count shouldn't matter until the laptop really gets up there and starts losing capacity.

In another thread, here's my post summarizing the 2012 vs 2013 results I got. Bottom line, when run in the HiDPI retina mode, the battery life takes a significant hit.
