2013 iMac, hiccup when writing to Time Machine?

I get slight hiccup each time my SSD equipped iMac writes to my external drive via Time Machine, is there an issue with accessing USB connected drives in Mavericks? I never really noticed this on my 2011 but with the speed of my new iMac odd pauses are much more noticeable.
