2013 mbp configuration advice

I'm upgrading from a 2011 air because it only has 2gb of ram and performance has suffered a bit. Because I get a student discount the air and pro are about the same price.

The configuration I'm looking at is the 2.4ghz i5, 256gb ssd.

I'm not sure if I should go with 16gb of ram or AppleCare. They are within 10$ price wise. I like the piece of mind with AppleCare but am nervous about not maxing the ram. Currently I use about 3 gb if ram at a time. I'm leaning towards AppleCare but am open to suggestions.

Not sure what country you are from (US as you say $?), but in the UK the student discount online includes 3 years applecare warranty (it is only 1 yr telephone support though unless you pay the small uplift charge which is about £50)

As for RAM, not many people need 16gb ram, only very heavy users with specific needs, eg high end video encoding.

I have the 8gb/256gb/2.4 i5 13" model and it's very fast.
