2013 rMBP 13 - TB3 and USB-C devices

Hi folks,

looking for a dock for my 2013 rMBP 13. I have an Elgato Thunderbolt 2 dock which was great, until it started frequently failing to power up.

Since I hope to someday update to a newer rMBP, I'd prefer to get a Thunderbolt 3 (or USB-C) dock, and use it with an adapter with my 2013 rMBP. As I understand it, Apple's TB2 to TB3 adapter will let yet you use a TB3 device with a TB2 system like mine. Questions:

1) How reliable is the adapter for TB3 devices? Particularly under Mojave (can't upgrade to Catalina due to my software).
2) Will the adapter also work for USB-C docks?
3) Will the adapter work for USB-C displays like the 4K LG?
4) Any decent third-party alternatives to the Apple adapter?

FWIW, I did get the Apple adapter. It works fine with my TB3 dock, but not as a direct MBP-USB-C adapter, which is a shame as I have a good 9-port USB-C hub which I can only connect to the rMBP 13 via the TB3 dock.
