2013 rMBP - Ubuntu Install issues?

I'm attempting to install ubuntu on a late 2013 rMBP - After the install ( which is sucessfull ) i'm able to boot into grub via refind (reffit) and choose ubuntu. MY problem is that once i choose ubuntu, i either hang on a purple background screen or on a blinking underscore cursor with a black background.

Anyone else with this? i've googled with no success.
