Okay so for the last few weeks my MacBook Pro has been freezing for about 10 seconds at a time. It happens numerous times a day and I don't know why. I'm running High Sierra 10.13.6. I thought it was just the trackpad and perhaps keyboard as well but even the seconds on the menu bar clock freeze as well so I'm assuming it's more of a system thing. Any advice? I've used Macs for many years but have not experienced this before.

Maybe High Sierra got error.

You could try update to Mojave or clean install High Sierra.

When this happened to me, it was disk error. Run DiskUtility and see if disk is OK. Cheap and easy try.
In any case, make sure you have backup of your data.

Open the Console and try to see if there is anything that might explain what is happening.
What is the Console? Where do I find that?

I use the First Aid option in Disk Utility right? I haven't used that app in a very long time.

Console is in Applications/Utilities

- and if you have not used First Aid in the Disk Utility, you are really lucky that you did not have disk issues. You should run First Aid once in a while just to make sure if any issues with disk structure happen, they get fixed early while it is still possible.

Make backup first!

I make a backup semi-regularly. I ran disk utility and there was no issues. The freezing still happens though. What would Console do? I've never used it before.

Console shows which programs are running and how much cpu they are using. So place it somewhere where you can see it and click on the cpu column until highest cpu load program/process is at the top. And when the system hangs, check if there is program/process which comes to the top before, during, or immediately after the hang. That would be likely culprit which is taking over and hangs the system. You may need to check for disk access (read/write) if it is not something hogging cpu but disk communication. It may - or may not - be something simple which can even be deleted. Like coin mining process of something in web browser, etc. Lots of possibilities and impossible to guess. If none shows up, it could be system issue or hardware. But Console is cheap to look at.

If I do a clean install of High Sierra that means I have to manually put back all my files and setting and whatnot right? I have since switched to a 2015 15" MBP and the random temporary freezing still happens.

I think so.
