2014 15” MBP -> M1 Air or 16” MBP?

I have a 2014 15” MBP 16gb/512gb. Going on 7 years now. The battery is nowhere near as strong. It gets hot.

I was originally thinking of getting a 16” MBP considering I would keep it just as long as my current one. But part of me just doesn’t want to spend the money.

My uses: live video streaming with dslr, some 1080p and 4k video editing, some light photo editing, zoom calls, book writing, docs, etc. I don’t really do much media consumption like watching videos and stuff.

I connect my mbp to a 27” monitor as a pure desktop replacement. I would do the same with the next laptop. But I do travel with my laptop. I’ve taken my mbp all over the world so weight isn’t an issue, but I wouldn’t take my 15” out of my bag for short stints like waiting at the airport or anything. I just keep it in my bag until my destination.

My current mbp is my only computer so I like connecting it to my monitor at home. The screen size comes in handy when working away when traveling.

I feel like the M1 air could handle all of the tasks I do. I liked the idea of going from my 2014 model to the 16” mbp with it being similar in feel and style. But the M1 air seems like such a deal at less than half the price with a smaller footprint and more portability and possibly better performance than my mbp.

I think you'd be more than fine with the M1 Air. It's performance is going to be better than the 2015 you are currently using and will be so much more portable.

Perhaps the M2 Air will have a 15" or 16" version, not sure if that's your thing, but this is my hope.

Lots of trade offs need to be made no matter which choice you make.

If I had the choice (and could afford it) I would go with the 16". in the big picture it costs only pennies a day if you keep it for many (4-6) years , more than the air m1.

I went from 15" retina 2015 to air M1 and the screen size is a big difference in daily usability. text on websites and the layouts are always "off" I have to zoom in/out constantly to see the full page or to get the menu bars/selections to show.

with my 15" the websites all "just work" as it does on my desktop. so the transition from one to another was/is consistent.
