I have a mid-2014 15" that I use as my main personal Mac. It's a fantastic machine and I really can't fault it in any way other than with the battery life, where it now seems like I'm always hanging off a charger.

I'm definitely nowhere near pushing the capabilities of the machine so I could get the iFixit kit and replace the battery for around £100, but given the age of the machine is it worth investing ~20% of the Mac's resale value in a new battery, or should I just put that money towards a new Mac?

Spend a 100 or 2.5k? Seems like you have your answer, you mentioned that you cannot find fault with your current machine - stick with it and use the money saved for a vacation or something :)

If your workflows aren't bottlenecked by the hardware, I would just replace the battery—but strongly suggest doing so at Apple for £200 (they have a recycle programme, offer warranty on the new battery and replace your Mac if they **** up).

I use the same Mac professionally as a TV editor, and still have no need to upgrade so I'm replacing the battery this Xmas. $289 is better than $5000. ;)

It does sound pretty logical when you look at it that way. But I would be selling a few things so the 16" wouldn't be quite so bad:

£500 for the current 15"
£900 for a 2018 i5 256GB Mac mini I have (turns out I prefer to use a portable machine more)
£300 Apple gift card

When I put it like that, it's only £600 for a new MacBook Pro vs £100-200 for the battery 🤔

It’s seems like you have already made up your mind. So, I am gonna make it even easier for you and say, get the 16” MBP ;)
Yeah, I agree. Logically it makes sense not to buy, but if emotionally you want one and it seems you have made up your mind - just buy it. Perhaps you were looking for edification or justification in the forums, so now you have it :)

Don't get me wrong, the 2019 16" machine is a fantastic computer. I was looking at it myself, but I bought a laptop 11 months ago, and this new MBP doesn't do anything more then my current machine. Emotionally, I was swayed but fear of my wife kept my credit card in my wallet :p

I was kinda hoping there was some good reason that I hadn't thought of, but it looks like I can buy one with a clear conscious! ;)

Faulty arithmetics. It costs you 1200 at least. Because 900 get from Mac Mini and 300 on your gift card is still money, doesn't matter what the source is.

ITs your money, and if you want it, I don't think anyone will knock you. The 2019 is a fine machine, so enjoy :)
